We’ve still got plenty of cold and snow to get through across Canada before signs of spring begin to appear.
But rays of hope are inching north of the border in the form of later sunsets. Toronto will soon experience its first post-5:00 p.m. sunset of the new year, and your evenings will only get longer from there.

The sun will set in Toronto at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10, a milestone we haven’t seen since Nov. 7.

Folks in the city will enjoy a little more than 9 hours of daylight to kick off the weekend, an increase of about 15 minutes since the winter solstice just a few weeks ago.

The lengthening of the day advances quickly through the rest of January. Toronto’s sunset will push back close to 5:30 p.m. by the final day of the month.
It’s a longer wait for that 5:00 p.m. sunset for many other cities across Canada, with factors like latitude and location within a time zone affecting the time on the clock when the sun slips below the horizon.

First 5pm sunsets 2026
Halifax is the next major city in line to experience a 5:00 p.m. sunset, which will arrive on Jan. 15. Winnipeg follows suit three days later, with the milestone reaching Edmonton on Jan. 24.
Despite residing at a lower latitude than Winnipeg and Edmonton, it’s a longer wait in Montreal because the city sits so far east within the Eastern Time Zone. As a result, Montreal’s sunset won’t reach 5:00 p.m. until Feb. 1.
