A five-month-old baby is still in critical condition following a multi-vehicle pileup in Laval, Que., that killed a six-year-old girl and injured others.

The collisions occurred on Monday evening on Route 335 between Dagenais Boulevard and Saint-Saëns Street.

Initially, nine people were reported injured by Urgences-santé, including three adults, the five-month old baby and the young girl who eventually died.

Four other people were reported to have injuries, but their lives were not in danger, according to the paramedic service.

A 40-year-old man was taken into custody, the Laval police service announced on Tuesday, but was then released.

On Wednesday, a spokesperson for police said investigators have transferred the file to Quebec's Crown prosecutor's office. The office asked for additional information, according to Laval police, and as a result, the 40-year-old man was released. Charges could be filed at a later time.

City councillor speaks out about road safety

On Tuesday, Laval city councillor David De Cotis offered his condolences in a Facebook post, while highlighting the dangers of Route 335 in that area.

He called for the installation of concrete barriers or reinforced medians on the road, temporary traffic-control devices to prevent cross-lane collisions and an "urgent" on-site assessment by transport authorities.

"Even temporary measures can save lives while longer-term solutions are evaluated," De Cotis said. "The safety of our residents, especially our children, must always come first."
