The mother of a 10-year-old boy from Barrie has been charged with first-degree murder after her son was found dead following a wellness check last week.
The child was found dead inside a Barrie home around 3 p.m. on New Year’s Eve while officers were responding to a wellness check, Barrie police said in a news release.
The 47-year-old mother was also found inside the Bayview Drive residence and was taken to the hospital, Jason Fearon, staff sergeant with Barrie Police Service, said in a video released on Thursday.

On Tuesday, police charged the woman with first-degree murder after she was cleared medically, Fearon said.
The major crime unit and forensic identification unit are continuing to investigate, said Fearon.
“Due to the nature of the incident and to respect the privacy of the family involved, updates will only be provided as the investigation permits,” he said in the video.
