The skies just got a whole lot unfriendlier — if you enjoy legroom and are flying WestJet, that is.
Video posted on Reddit shows a man and woman on one of the airline’s new planes crammed into their seats with their knees under the seat trays in front of them.
“WestJet changed their seats and this is how much leg room basic fares get. You have to pay for a reclining seat now,” the Redditor declared.

The couple’s daughter, who filmed the video, laughs as she asks her parents, “Can you straighten out your legs there?” to which they reply, “Impossible.”
The mom jokes that she’s going to be “sharing (her) leg space” with her husband, as her daughter replied, “You have to pay for the other leg.”
Nope. Nuh-uh. No, thank you! (Reddit)
WestJet’s new policy
WestJet’s fixed recline design in its new aircrafts prevents passengers from putting their seats back — unless they pay extra for the so-called premium seats.
The policy allowed for one more row to be added, making the seats cheaper. Passengers must decide if the cost of not being able to stretch their legs is worth it.

“The cabin has been thoughtfully designed to offer WestJet’s welcoming service at every budget,” Samantha Taylor, WestJet executive vice president and chief experience officer, said in a statement when the policy was announced.
“It reflects our commitment to elevating every aspect of the travel experience and meeting guest demand for a broader range of product offerings.”
However, WestJet said in an internal memo that the new configuration would only go ahead on 22 planes “for the time being” following backlash from employees and passengers.
Configuration sparks online backlash
Reddit users, however, were shocked by the close quarters, calling it a “death trap.”

One person asked: “Is this even safe in case of emergency?”
A second person commented, “Would love to see the crash position in the safety manuals.”
Another observer said they “felt the urge to stand up and shuffle just watching this video.”
One user said they would “prefer standing” because the confined space now “looks like literal torture.”
