Is there a better way to start off the new year than seeing that this time it was the alleged carjackers who got jacked?
It’s safe to say these alleged carjackers have not had a good start to 2026. If fact, they were humiliated.
Sometimes the bad guys lose and the good guys win. It doesn’t happen often. It’s sure nice when it does.
“On Friday, Jan. 2, 2026, at approximately 6:45 p.m., police responded to the report of an attempted carjacking in the area of Daffodil Ave. and Doncrest Dr.,” York Regional Police said in a news release. “The victim pulled into a residential driveway when he was blocked in by a suspect vehicle and confronted by a suspect with a firearm.”

Oh, to see the look on the faces of these guys when York Regional Police’s 2 District officers rolled up on them.
And the canine unit.
They didn’t see that coming. And it was going so well at first. The thugs allegedly threatened an innocent person with a gun, they had the advantage and were ready to rock and roll with this 2023 GMC pickup truck.
Didn’t expect that
But some stuff happened they were not counting on. It was like they were cursed.
“The victim managed to escape and contacted police,” Const. James Dickson said.
This time there was no long wait to talk to a 911 operator.

“The victim gave very good descriptions,” Dickson said.
Quick response from cops
And police units responded quickly.
They managed to get on the scene to prevent the vehicle from being driven away. Then more things happened they were not expecting.
“They original vehicle they arrived in conked out,” Dickson said.
Oops.
Now the two alleged suspects were on foot and trying to outrun police. But they got cut off by police who know the area well.
And no one is outrunning those K9s.
“Both suspects were captured and arrested,” Dickson said. “A gun was retrieved nearby.”
Two charged
Jinquan Shen, 33, and Jett Cortez De Guzman, 38, both of Toronto, were charged with robbery with a firearm, possession of a restricted firearm, disguise with intent, possession of a firearm obtained by crime.

Cortez De Guzman was also charged with driving while under suspension and both were charged with breaches of their probations.
A gun seized in the arrest of Jett Cortez De Guzman, 38, of Toronto, and Jinquan Shen, 33, of Toronto.
The charges against them have not been tested in court. But the public is still free to take some satisfaction out of the fact this time, alleged crime didn’t pay and these guys were caught and will once again be before the courts. No matter what is decided there, nothing will change the fact that every once in a while an alleged car jacker gets the feeling of knowing what it’s like to lose.
These guys lost their alleged gun, their freedom, both cars in the alleged crime scheme, and their dignity.
Welcome to law enforcement 2026 in York Region.
