As Calgarians look to return to work and school, the city announced traffic changes set to go into effect as crews work to repair the Bearspaw South feeder main break.
Starting Monday, a single eastbound lane on 16th Avenue N.W will be reopened to traffic east of Sarcee Trail N.W.
Additionally, access to eastbound 16th Avenue N.W. from Sarcee will also be reopened.
Westbound from 16th Avenue N.W. between 49th Street and Sarcee remains closed, with reduced speed throughout the construction area.

With eastbound 16th Avenue N.W. and 49th Street N.W. returning to normal operations, there will no longer be a left-hand turn from southbound 49th Street N.W. onto eastbound 16th Avenue N.W. Drivers looking to travel east on 16th Avenue N.W. should now use Home Road N.W.
Crews will continue repairs at the break site along 16th Avenue N.W.
Water has been removed from the site and the damaged section has been excavated.
Crews are expected to start the pipe removal phase of the repair on Sunday afternoon.
Calgarians on the road are asked to observe all construction signage in the area and expect delays. Drivers are also asked to consider alternative routes when travelling in the area.

City crews continue to work on cutting out the damaged section of the water main break in Calgary on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026.
Calgarians urged to continue conserving water
Calgary Emergency Management Agency Chief Susan Henry said the first Monday of 2026 is expected to mark the return to work and school for many Calgarians.
“We’re continuing to remind everyone to adjust their water use habits and help conserve our water system,” Henry said.
On Saturday, Calgary’s water usage rose up to 495 millilitres, which strained the city’s supply and was above the acceptable usage goal of 485 ml.
The acceptable threshold of 485 ml is meant to ensure that there is water available for consumption and life-safety purposes for emergency response situations.

“The urgent need to reduce our water use still exists today,” Henry said. “We are still asking Calgarians to conserve water. Whether that means a shorter shower or fewer flushes, there are many ways we can all ensure our water system remains stable while crews work on this critical repair.”
The city thanked Calgarians for their patience and diligence as crews continue to work 24/7 on repairs.
