Flooding at long-term care home leaves some residents displaced

A significant flooding incident at the Carleton Lodge long-term care home Saturday has left some residents displaced.

Ottawa Fire Services responded to an incident at around 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 27 after flooding was reported at the long-term care home.

Another call from a monitoring agency reported active alarms going off in the building.

There were concerns that part of the ceiling was collapsing.

A large water leak was found on the second floor that had flooded several rooms downstairs.

Firefighters constructed a “catch-basin system” to redirect water out of windows while other crew members assisted staff to shut off the water supply.

Crews then worked to remove standing water in flooded areas.

Firefighters also helped staff transport residents. Some of the patients were picked up by family members, while others were transported by OC Transpo buses to other long-term care homes.

Emergency personnel cleared the scene at around 11 p.m.

The City of Ottawa also provided a large truck to transport some 10 beds with mattresses to a temporary location.

A spokesperson for the Carleton Lodge could not immediately be reached for comment.
