Saskatchewan RCMP say there won’t be a criminal investigation into the death of a boy who died on Ochapowace First Nation, east of Regina, on Saturday night.

RCMP confirmed in a news release on Wednesday that the boy’s death is not considered suspicious.

According to the release, the Saskatchewan Coroners Service is still working to determine the cause of death.

“As this is considered a sudden death investigation with no criminal element, the police do not have any other information to provide, and we don’t anticipate further updates.” RCMP said.

According to police, the boy was at a home in the community in the hours before his death. He left to walk to another home around 5 p.m. CST.

The boy was found dead just before 8 p.m. CST, several hundred metres away from where he left. His body was discovered by someone passing through the area.

"We understand there is conversation happening locally and at this time the RCMP cannot confirm whether or not the boy’s death was the result of an animal mauling, if weather or another element was a factor," RCMP said in a previous news release.

Police said the autopsy results would help determine any further necessary steps.

"At this time our focus is on the family and community in dealing with this devastating loss," Ochapowace First Nation Chief Shelley Bear previously said in an email to CBC.
