The University of Michigan was aware of some troubling messages on social media involving former football coach Sherrone Moore more than a year before he was fired earlier this month.

A report published by The Athletic on Monday detailed messages exchanged between Moore and several women on social media, dating to 2020 with some sent as recently as last month.

“It was not sexual harassment,” one official told The Athletic. “It was propriety, ‘Are you an idiot?’ kind of stuff.”

The outlet spoke to five women who detailed what were termed “strange” or “uncomfortable” exchanges with Moore, who was fired with cause two weeks ago after it was revealed he was allegedly involved in an “inappropriate relationship with a staff member.”

Moore offered to fly woman to Michigan

Moore, who is a married father of three, reportedly reached out to the women through the social media site by “liking” posts or sending direct messages.

One of the women involved told the outlet that Moore asked if he could fly her to Michigan to see him. She asked if there were any expectations with the request and if she would be “holed up in some hotel” during her trip.

“I guess we will have to see, I would say yes but you would also have a driver haha,” Moore reportedly wrote, adding they would “go into that detail later.”

In an exchange with another woman in late October and early November, Moore reportedly posted a fire emoji on a story that featured her on a StairMaster at the gym. This came after she had replied with a “hello” to his hand-waving emoji.

Moore’s firing and arrest

Moore allegedly told his mistress he was going to make her watch him kill himself and that “my blood is on your hands,” prosecutors said during a court appearance last week after he was officially charged with felony home invasion and a pair of misdemeanours — stalking and breaking and entering – according to officials.

The charges stem from Moore allegedly breaking into the home of Paige Shiver — his executive assistant and former lover — then grabbing butter knives and kitchen scissors before threatening self-harm.

Shiver, 32, reportedly ended the relationship with Moore earlier in the week.

Prosecutor Kati Rezmierski told the court that Moore allegedly continued to call and text Shiver even as she attempted to ignore him.

On Dec. 10, she reported the affair to the school’s athletic department, leading to his termination and the alleged incident at her home.

What Moore allegedly said

According to Rezmierski, the couple had been involved in an “intimate relationship” for several years.

While describing the alleged events of Dec. 10, the prosecutor told the courts Moore said he was going to kill himself and “make you watch” and that “my blood is on your hands.

“You ruined my life,” he also allegedly told her.

Moore could face five years in prison if convicted of the top charge of home invasion, according to court documents.
