A male has been shot by police after allegedly stabbing two people in Toronto's northwest on Monday, police say.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which was notified by police after the incident, says the male suffered serious injuries in the shooting and is in hospital. The SIU is now investigating.

According to police, the stabbing happened in the area of Jane Street and Shoreham Drive, north of Finch Avenue W. Police responded to reports of a person with a knife at about 3:30 p.m.

Police arrived to find two victims with stab wounds. One was taken to hospital.

Police say an officer fired at a male armed with an edged weapon. The male was taken to hospital.

Two officers sustained minor injuries, but were not taken to hospital, according to police.

The SIU said it would provide an update on its investigation later.

The SIU is an independent agency that investigates the conduct of police officers in incidents that may have resulted in death, serious injury, the discharge of a firearm or allegations of sexual assault.
