The Ottawa Police Service has issued a warning to the public about a new variation of distraction thefts being reported across the city.

In these incidents, suspects approach individuals, often in parking lots, and attempt to sell jewelry that is fake and of low quality, a news release said on Dec. 18.

While the victim is engaged in conversation with the “salesperson,” a second suspect attempts to steal a wallet or other valuables from the victim’s vehicle.

Police advised members of the public to remain alert to their surroundings, particularly in parking lots and less-busy areas and to walk away and seek help, if necessary, if approached by a stranger under suspicious circumstances.

Anyone who believes they have been a victim or witness to a distraction theft was advised not to follow the suspect, but rather to 911 immediately to report as many details as possible, including those of physical descriptions, clothing and any vehicles involved.

Those with information about these distraction thefts were asked to contact the Ottawa Police Service Reporting Unit by telephone at 613-236-1222, ext. 7300, or online at ottawapolice.ca/report.

Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-8477 or online at crimestoppers.ca.
