One victim of an attack in St. John's has been released from hospital. Another woman who was in critical condition is now considered stable, says the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.

The victims were attacked in a St. John’s apartment building on Monday evening.

Police responded to reports of a man banging on doors and screaming. Officers found two women with serious injuries when they arrived, and both were sent to hospital.

Mitchell Rose, 32, has been accused of attempted murder in relation to the attacks.

According to Rose’s family, he has schizophrenia and was in a state of psychosis. They say Rose had not been receiving the help he needed, after he was discharged from a community treatment order in the months prior, without their knowledge.

Rose stands accused of two counts of attempted murder, three counts of assault with a weapon and three counts of assault causing bodily harm.

Rose is due back in court on Dec. 17, for the results of a psychiatric evaluation to determine if he is fit to stand trial.
