Drivers in northeastern parts of Nova Scotia and Cape Breton are being warned of snow squalls today as a wintry storm is expected to dump up to 20 centimetres of snow.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement warning of high winds and snow for parts of Antigonish, Colchester, Cumberland, Guysborough, Pictou and Hants counties, as well as Cape Breton.

A yellow warning for snow squalls was issued for Cape Breton, Pictou and Antigonish. The national weather forecaster says visibility will be significantly reduced and snow will quickly accumulate. Winds are expected to gust up to 70 kilometres an hour.

Some schools in the province were closed ahead of the wintry weather.

All ferry crossings from Caribou, N.S., to Wood Islands, P.E.I., have been cancelled.
