A teenage boy is in hospital with life-threatening injuries and a suspect is now in police custody after a stabbing in Nepean on Thursday.

Ottawa police say emergency responders were called around noon to the 100 block of Constellation Drive, where they found the teen in critical condition. He was treated at the scene and taken to hospital where he remains "with life-threatening injuries," police said on the social media platform X.

"To date, one suspect is in custody and the police investigation continues," police said.

Earlier on Tuesday afternoon, police and paramedic vehicles were seen parked near the entrance of the Mary Pitt Centre, a municipal administration building that contains the offices of Ottawa Public Health and the provincial offences court.

The provincial offences centre has been closed for the day and will reopen at 8:30 a.m. Friday.

In a statement, the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board confirmed the teen is a student at nearby Sir Guy Carleton Secondary School. The school did not go into lockdown following the stabbing, a board spokesperson said.

The board said the boy's family has been notified and the school is co-operating with the police investigation.
