A 24-year-old man is facing several charges, including attempted murder, after police allege he shot at Saskatchewan RCMP officers trying to arrest a wanted man on Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation Wednesday.

Mounties say officers from a Prince Albert warrant enforcement team were trying to arrest a 42-year-old man wanted on several warrants just before noon on Wednesday.

They say officers saw the wanted man with another, younger man in a residential area of the nation, located about 70 kilometres northwest of Prince Albert.

But when officers approached the two men, the younger man shot at them, RCMP said in a Thursday afternoon news release.

One officer shot back, but neither the police officers nor the two men reported any injuries, according to RCMP.

The older man was arrested on the scene, but police say the accused shooter fled. He was found in the small community at 2:30 p.m., and RCMP say they seized a gun and ammunition as well.

The 24-year-old has been arrested and charged with one count of attempted murder, two counts of possessing a firearm contrary to a ban, and one count of possessing a gun without a licence, RCMP said.

He remains in custody and is next set to appear in court on Friday morning in Prince Albert.

The 42-year-old also remains in custody on warrants, but charges are not being considered in the Wednesday incident, RCMP said.

Prince Albert RCMP have taken over the investigation, and continue to investigate with the help of the warrant enforcement team and the Prince Albert forensic identification section, the release said.
