Soak up these final hours of spring-like warmth on the western Prairies before the cold front arrives.

A double-digit temperature swing will blow across most of Alberta through the middle of the week as our comfortable weekend pattern breaks down in the face of winter’s revenge.

The same winds that’ll crash frigid temperatures into the province will also generate a multi-day snowfall event through the end of the week.

Substantial snows and major travel impacts are possible across parts of the province. Plan ahead for disruptions.

DON’T MISS: Warmest winter ever: Canada's record season reaches new heights

Monday: One last warm day before the chill arrives

A ridge of high pressure hanging over Western Canada brought an exceptionally warm weekend to the region, allowing highs to soar into the upper teens across Alberta while some lucky towns in neighbouring British Columbia cracked the 20-degree mark.

Sunday afternoon's temperature at Edmonton Airport closed in on the record for the warmest reading we've ever measured this early in the year. The existing early-warmth record is held by a 14.4°C day back on March 8, 1988.

Nighttime lows are unseasonably warm, as well. Edmonton’s overnight low on Sunday will be warmer than the city’s typical daytime high for this time of year.

We’re looking at one last spring-like day for both Calgary and Edmonton on Monday, where daytime highs will creep into the mid-teens. Monday’s warmth could again challenge daily temperature records in spots.

And then the cold front hits.

Tuesday and beyond: A brutal mid-March reality check

A disturbance rolling out of the northern Prairies will gradually replace the ridge responsible for our weekend warmth.

The cold front will slide through northern and eastern Alberta beginning Tuesday. Edmonton’s lofty high of 15°C on Monday will fall to a paltry 2°C on Tuesday. Readings there will drop below freezing Tuesday night and stay there through next weekend.

Story continues

Warmer air will hang on just a day longer down the road toward Calgary, where above-seasonal readings are likely again Tuesday afternoon. The cold air will win out overnight, though, and we’ll see much colder air overspread the rest of Alberta by the middle of the week.

MUST SEE: Historic El Niño has weakened, but its impacts hang on

Calgary’s high of 7°C on Tuesday will seem like a distant memory by Wednesday, when snow will accompany a brisk daytime reading of just -5°C. Yes, that’s a minus sign next to the day’s high.

A persistent slog of chilly northeasterly winds blowing against the mountains will generate a long-duration upsloping snow event for much of central and southern Alberta.

Periods of snow will develop across the region by Wednesday, likely persisting through the end of the week.

Some areas could see substantial snowfall totals with major travel impacts.

Snowfall totals by next weekend could exceed 30 cm for parts of southwestern Alberta, marking some of the greatest snowfall accumulations we’ve seen all season.

Be sure to check back over the next couple of days as forecasters monitor this pattern flip and the risk for disruptive snows.
