A powerful nor’easter overtook Atlantic Canada after sweeping through the U.S. Northeast, leaving substantial snowfall on Tuesday.
Before dawn on Wednesday, nearly 30 cm of snow had already been reported at the Halifax airport, with 7 cm falling in just one hour.
Big totals so far
As of 8 a.m, Wednesday, some cities had already seen significant snowfall accumulation, including Shelburne with 37 cm, Halifax Stanfield Airport reporting 29 cm, and upwards of 35 cm in the Halifax area.
As for St. John’s, it looks like this will be the city’s most significant snowfall of the season, replacing the January 5th, 2024 record, which saw 23 cm of daily snowfall. Between 30 and 50+ cm is possible for northeastern Newfoundland and along the Trans-Canada Highway by the time this system moves out of the region.
