A large fishing trawler that was in distress off the coast of Labrador has returned to St. John's. (Submitted by Susan Keough)
A large fishing trawler that was taking on water off the southern coast of Labrador has returned to St. John's safe and sound.
The Northern Osprey III, an 80-metre factory freezer shrimp boat, made a distress call on Sunday when it began taking on water.
Phil Walker of the Canadian Coast Guard told CBC Radio Wednesday that the water was caused by a protrusion in the hull, and that divers would be on site to make temporary repairs.
On Thursday evening, the coast guard said the repairs were successful and that the vessel returned to St. John's unassisted.
Thirty people were aboard the ship, and there were no reported injuries.
