Arabnews24.ca:Friday 3 February 2023 01:30 PM: Investigators with Toronto police are holding a news conference Friday afternoon to provide an update into the investigation into the death of longtime CBC radio producer Michael Finlay.
Finlay died Tuesday from medical complications following a random assault in Toronto's east end on the afternoon of Jan. 24. He was assaulted by a stranger as he walked along Danforth Avenue in the area of Jones Avenue, police say.
CBC News will carry the news conference live in this story. It is slated to start at 1:30 p.m. ET.
Though they did not identify Finlay by name, police said in a news release that the victim in the attack fell to the ground and suffered serious injuries as a result.
Police described the suspect in the case as a man in his 20s, about six feet tall with a slim build. He was last seen wearing a red paper mask with flames on it, according to police, as well as a black sweater and black pants.
In an email this week to CBC staff, Cathy Perry, executive director of newsgathering and operations, said Finlay will be remembered as an exceptional storyteller, documentary maker and editor.
Finlay travelled the world to produce radio documentaries for a number of programs, including Sunday Morning.
"If you worked on a documentary with Michael, you were experiencing the pinnacle of the craft," Perry's email said.
