With outside noise aplenty heading into a must-win game, the Ottawa Senators lost their fourth straight and fell 3-2 to their division rival Florida Panthers.

No time to waste. Let’s get to grading.

Forwards

Claude Giroux: A+

It’s unfortunate that the Senators are wasting a remarkable season from the the 37-year-old. Night in and night out, Giroux is making the most of his ice time, playing responsible hockey in his own end and getting super creative at the other. He saved a goal on a power play in the second, and scored to cut it to 3-2 late in the third.

Tim Stutzle: D

His fly-by at the top of the slot gave Evan Rodrigues a clear lane to beat Leevi Merilainen with a wrist shot on the power play for the 1-0 marker. Stutzle was not his cunning self with the puck, waiting far too long to make decisions and falling victim to some quality stick checks from the Florida defence. His inability to make quality passes on the power play drew boos from the home crowd in the third.

Brady Tkachuk: C-

The captain was close to scoring a few times when the puck found him down low, but his overall game was not up to par. His speed is lacking right now, hampering his ability to keep up in transition.

Fabian Zetterlund: B

It was maybe the luckiest goal of his NHL career, but they all count the same.

Dylan Cozens: B-

He created a number of odd-man rushes with an inspired north-south game, however, Cozens fumbled the puck one too many times, which resulted in zero shots on net.

David Perron: B

The most energetic I’ve seen him in weeks. Perron used good speed to retrieve the puck on the dump-in that ultimately led to Zetterlund’s goal, and he even beat out a delayed icing call in the second period.

Drake Batherson: B

He hit the far post on a wide open net on a power play in the second period when the Senators badly needed a goal. Batherson tipped Giroux’s shot to cut it to 3-2 late in the third.

Shane Pinto: B+

Pinto played a solid game. He had early chemistry with Michael Amadio, setting his linemate up for two good scoring chances. Pinto protected the puck well and was one of the better Sens forwards when it came to dissecting the Florida defence. He had the primary assist on Zetterlund’s goal.

Michael Amadio: B-

More offensive chances than recently, but still just one goal in his past 28 games.

Ridly Greig: C+

It was his bobblehead night. He was all right.

Nick Cousins: B-

Cousins showed some good pace and came out on the right side of a few battles against his former team.

Lars Eller: C+

He drew a high-sticking penalty driving the slow on an odd-man rush in the first. It will understandably take the 36-year-old more time to get back to normal after missing weeks due to a broken foot.

Defencemen

Jake Sanderson: A-

Sanderson calmed the play down when it got chaotic in the Senators’ end. He patiently waited for opportunities to break the puck out, and pounced when lanes opened up. He was forced to clean up a lot of sloppy play from his defence partner, Artem Zub.

Artem Zub: D

That was the epitome of a rough game for Zub. His high-sticking penalty in the first led to the Panthers’ opening goal, and he took a debatable minor for interference eight minutes later. The night got even worse for Zub in the second when he was cross-checked head first into the boards by Carter Verhaeghe, who would only receive two minutes even after video review. A befuddling decision from the referees.

Thomas Chabot: B

Chabot’s giveaway in the second led to a 2-on-1 rush, during which he took a slashing penalty. Florida would score on the ensuing power play. However, it was a hard fought game from Chabot, with four blocks and three hits. He made great outlet passes and had another confident night offensively, recording three shots.

Jordan Spence: B+

Spence plays relatively sheltered minutes, but he has begun to settle into Travis Green’s style of defensive play. His first couple months with the team featured a lot of frantic defending, and in turn, poor positional play, but he has made strides in that area.

Tyler Kleven: B+

Ever since his worst game of the season on Monday, a 5-3 loss to the Detroit Red Wings, Kleven has been one of the steadiest defencemen on the team. He showed more grit against the Panthers on Saturday with four hits.

Nick Jensen: C

He fell down on a mild Sam Bennett crosscheck and created the perfect screen for Verhaeghe to wrist one over the glove of Merilainen. Jensen nearly made up for it seconds later, hitting a post on the next play.

Goalies

Leevi Merilainen: B-

At some point, you’ve got to feel bad for Merilainen. He’s 23-years-old—that’s a toddler in goaltender years—and he’s been tasked with saving the Senators’ season in Linus Ullmark’s absence. No, he was not good enough on Saturday night, but this entire situation is unfair to him. He deserves more time to develop.

Now it’s time for your take; tell us in the comment section with Senators impressed you and who needs to improve their game.
