A 48-year-old man faces multiple weapons charges after Winnipeg police say he tried to assault a taxi cab driver in the William Whyte neighbourhood early Sunday morning.

Around 1:40 a.m. on Sunday, a taxi driver set off their emergency strobe light during an attempted assault near Burrows Avenue and Powers Street to get the attention of nearby North End patrol officers in a marked cruiser, police said in a Sunday news release.

Police said officers saw the taxi pull over in the 200 block of Powers Street. At that time, the suspect walked away, police said.

When police detained the man, he was carrying a loaded Springfield Hellcat 9x19 handgun with a prohibited 13 round magazine, according to the release.

A 48-year-old man is facing several weapons charges, including possession of a restricted weapon. He was detained in custody, police said.
