An expired license plate spotted on a provincial police automated license plate reader led police to a 34-year-old Toronto man who allegedly has more than $27,000 in unpaid fines.

The Ottawa OPP pulled the driver over on the Queensway near Pinecrest.

OPP spokesman Michael Fathi said in an email that the hefty total was still being analyzed, but the fines could be from speed cameras, red light cameras, parking tickets, or tolls.

“(Police have) no idea how long that would be piling up, but likely for several years,” Fathi said.

The total does not include the minimum $5,000 fine he now faces for having no insurance.

Or the $110 fine for the expired license plate that first drew police attention.

Police reminded drivers that license plate permits do not automatically renew on a birthday if you have outstanding fines or your vehicle is not insured.
