Up to 60 mm of rain possible in Hamilton and area on Sunday, says Environment Canada

The Hamilton area is under a rainfall warning on Sunday, with heavy rain in the forecast, according to Environment Canada.

The federal weather agency says Hamilton, Brantford, Burlington, Niagara and St. Catharines could see between 30 and 60 millimetres of rain, with higher amounts possible.

“Rain will begin this morning becoming heavy at times through the afternoon and evening,” reads a rainfall warning from Environment Canada.

“Precipitation may begin as freezing rain briefly before changing over to rain with little ice accretion expected. There will be the risk for a few isolated thunderstorms as well."

The rain is expected to ease overnight.

People should clear storm drains of snow and ice, if possible, Environment Canada said, adding that localized flooding is possible, and some roads may become impassable.

“Don't drive through flooded roadways. Avoid low-lying areas. Stay away from rivers, creeks and culverts. Consider moving valuables to higher levels of your home,” it said.
