Boxing Day travellers take note: 'Significant' freezing rain is in the forecast

If you're planning on travelling on Dec. 26, be prepared for tough driving conditions, says Environment Canada.

The national weather agency says significant freezing rain is likely for Windsor, Chatham-Kent and Sarnia-Lambton.

It's expected to start Friday morning and last into the afternoon.

The Windsor area could see two to five milimetres of ice accumulate, but in Sarnia and Chatham, it could be anywhere from five to 10 millimetres.

"Roads and walkways will likely become icy and slippery," the agency said in an alert known as a special weather statement issued Wednesday afternoon. "Motorists should expect difficult winter driving conditions and adjust plans accordingly."

Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing in the afternoon, prompting a switch to rain, but in the London area, light snow is expected.
