'Fallout' Season 2: Walton Goggins didn't see this moment with The Ghoul and Ella Purnell's Lucy coming

Based on the popular video game, Fallout has returned for Season 2 on Prime Video, with a story that is more complex and exciting than ever. While Season 1 set the foundation for this world and its characters, with Ella Purnell's Lucy travelling through the Wasteland to find her father, played by Kyle MacLachlan, her morality and optimism are put to the test as the journey to New Vegas continues in Season 2.

"Is Lucy going to hold on to her ideals? This golden rule? And how much is she going to change?" Purnell said during a panel at CCXP in São Paulo, Brazil. "Lucy's on a long journey. She starts ... the Lucy that we know, the optimistic one, but she's spending a lot of time with The Ghoul, who is not so optimistic, shall we say."

'I didn't see from a million miles'

Running alongside Lucy's story is what we continue to learn about The Ghoul (Walton Goggins) in Fallout Season 2, specifically related to Cooper Howard's past.

"Cooper Howard, you got to know him a bit in Season 1, but Season 2 is a deep dive and deep exploration, picking up where we left off," Walton Goggins said. "Season 1 was about ... how little he knows about the world that he thought he knew, and so much of The Ghoul ... is informed by Cooper Howard's experience in the past."

And as we see the relationship between The Ghoul and Lucy evolve, there's also a moment between them that floored Goggins.

"There comes a point ... that I didn't see from a million miles. I couldn't see it," Goggins said. "But when I read it, I didn't know what would happen on the other side, and it blew my mind. It has to do with this relationship between Lucy and The Ghoul."

'When he showed up, he brought an entire world with him'

Season 2 also marks the introduction of a character fans of the game have been waiting for, Mr. Robert House, played by Justin Theroux. We first see Mr. House pre-war in the first episode of Fallout Season 2, where we quickly understand his political power in the lead-up to the bombs dropping.

Theroux and Goggins, who are friends, were quick to gush about how much they enjoyed working together for the first time.

"I've been a fan of Justin's for a really long time. I've been a friend of Justin's for a really long time. And what I was looking most forward to, we never worked together, is being in that space and watching my friend do this, and listening to him," Goggins said. "And when he showed up, he brought an entire world with him. ... And the joy of just watching a dear friend do their thing, it's a real privilege."

"That's the thing about every aspect of this game, and House being such a seminal figure in the world of Fallout, the game. ... Every single corner you look, there's an Easter egg, but none more than his House."

"I've seen Walton work his whole career. I've known him for a long time. And it's like getting invited to watch your favourite magician do their magic tricks, and learn their tricks, and have a front row seat to it," Theroux added. "We were giddy with excitement the day before we worked together. ... We had a couple of really big barn burner scenes to do together, and it was really fun to chop those scenes up."

Aaron Moten in Fallout Season 2 (Lorenzo Sisti/Prime)

'We really need to hear what this melody is doing'

As we head into a more robust Season 2, with lots of great storylines and surprises to come with each episode released weekly, the continuation of Fallout feels like an elevated evolution of the series.

"Our first season really felt like an overture to me. It's got a lot of the themes that will be addressed throughout the series. Within it, embedded in it, some secrets in here too, that we start revealing in the second season," Aaron Moten, who plays Maximus, said. "But also, our second season now feels like an expansion. We're in the first movement of the music now, and we really need to hear what this melody is doing."

"And these characters, as they spread across the wastelanders, there are new perspectives, new characters, new creatures."
