A Nunavut judge has sentenced the two attackers in the assault of a woman in Kinngait in 2021.
Laimiki and Archie Toonoo were both charged with aggravated assault in the incident that took place in Archie’s home while both men were under the influence of alcohol.
Laimiki was also charged with attempted murder for the incident.
On Nov. 18, Archie was sentenced to two years of probation with conditions.

On Monday, Laimiki was sentenced to eight years and two months in jail. But, in court documents, Justice Christian Lyons said Laimiki has already served four years in relation to the crime.
So, Laimiki will serve a day less than two years of jail time.
The Crown proposed a prison sentence of 10 to 12 years. The defence asked for six to nine years, due to Laimiki's mental health, the fact that he was under the influence of alcohol and that the attack was not pre-meditated.
Lyons said he would have imposed a sentence of 10 years if not for several factors including Laimiki's mental health and his lengthy pre-trial custody.

Following his release, Laimiki will be on probation for three years with conditions including continuing mental health treatments and refraining from drugs and alcohol.
Lyons said this sentence allows Laimiki to serve a lengthy probation order and that this option wouldn't have been available if he were to impose a further federal sentence of two years or more.
