A group of five teens, including four minors, stabbed a 35-year-old man outside the Lionel-Groulx Metro station on Thursday evening in what appeared to be a random attack, Montreal police said.

The stabbing occurred around 8:30 p.m. Thursday and the suspects, a group of five young men, fled the scene.

Police arrested four people nearby, however. They were aged 13, 15, 17 and 18. Police are still searching for a fifth suspect, a 14-year-old. One of the suspects was arrested with a knife. Another had a stick.

The underage suspects who were arrested will appear in youth court on Friday to face assault charges. The 18-year-old will appear in court at a later date.

The 35-year-old man was transported to hospital but his life is not in danger.

Sabrina Gauthier, a spokesperson for the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal, said the attack appeared to be random.

"We're trying to figure out why the young people just beat some guy or randomly … were aggressive," she said. "It appears to be a random attack."

Police investigators are trying to understand the motive behind the attack, Gauthier said, and are analyzing security camera footage.
