Sask. winter conditions strike north, south as RCMP warns of icy roads

The Saskatchewan RCMP is warning travellers about road conditions in the province's southwest, west of Saskatoon.

It says Highways 7, 14, 21 and 51 near communities like Kindersley, Unity, Kerrobert and Macklin are facing icy conditions, citing freezing rain as a factor.

The Sasktchewan Highway Hotline is recommending against travel in certain sections of those highways.

"If travel is necessary, stay on roads that have recently received road maintenance," Sask. RCMP said in a statement issued Friday evening.

Meanwhile, in the northern section of Saskatchewan, Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for the communities of and around Pelican Narrows, Cumberland House and Creighton, Sask.

Environment Canada issued a warning Friday of 10 to 15 centimetres of snow expected in that region, with snowfall easing up into Saturday morning.

In the Maple Creek and Cypress Hills area, as much as 30 to 50 centimetres of snow is expected to fall by Sunday evening in the worst hit areas.

It also warned of extreme cold in the areas of Wollaston Lake and Collins Bay, Sask., where the wind chill is expected to reach near –45 Friday night.

Environment Canada warned that frostbite can develop within minutes especially with windchill and to keep pets indoors.

"Watch for cold related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes," it said in an alert.
