Nova Scotia RCMP are turning to the public for help in finding a suspect related to hate-motivated threats and mischief in Antigonish, N.S.
In a news release Friday, police said they received a report of a man who was using a mobile device to record a group of women and children on July 24.
"When a woman in the group asked him to stop recording, he made threats and comments related to the perceived race and background of the group members," police said in the release. "He left on foot and did not follow through on the threats."
Police believe the same man is responsible for leaving garbage and urine in front of a mosque on July 28, based on witness statements, photos and surveillance footage.
The suspect is believed to be in his 50s or 60s with thin, grey hair.
In the July 24 incident, he was wearing grey sweatpants, a T-shirt, a ball cap and blue sneakers.
In the July 28 incident, he was wearing dark sunglasses, a blue and white striped shirt, and jeans, and was carrying a green reusable shopping bag.
"Based on the nature of the comments made and the acts at the mosque, investigators believe that both incidents were motivated by hate. The RCMP takes incidents of hate with utmost seriousness and condemns these criminal acts," police said.
Information on either incident can be shared directly with Antigonish County District RCMP at 902-863-6500. Anonymous tips can be made to Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
