Muggy, hot air cooks up storm threat in eastern Ontario and Quebec

As we enter the latter half of the first weekend in August, conditions will become quite favourable for severe storms in eastern Ontario and southern Quebec.

Stay weather-aware as your outdoor plans on Sunday may need to be changed with the development of thunderstorms, which could bring large hail, heavy rain and strong winds to parts of eastern Ontario and southern Quebec.

Pay close attention to the radar as you go about your day, and stay alert for potential watches and warnings issued in your area.

After many severe thunderstorm warnings were issued across southern Quebec on Saturday, another around is looking likely for Sunday. It’s a classic midsummer setup across eastern Ontario and southern Quebec as a spell of hot and humid air remains locked in place over the regions on Sunday.

A weak cold front draped over southern Quebec and eastern Ontario could trigger some severe storms on Sunday afternoon and evening along the cold front.

Heading into the afternoon, eastern ontario will be see those scattered thunderstorms pop up while southern Quebec, especially along the St. Lawrence River, gets in on the action in the late afternoon and early evening.

With the amount of moisture in the atmosphere, heavy rain can cause localized flooding, in addition to the risk of large hail and strong winds.

Come Monday, another system tracks into Central Canada with another round of rain for eastern Ontario and southern Quebec, and a risk of thunderstorms for southern sections of the former.

However, behind this system will be more seasonal conditions as the jet stream plunges south and allows more of a northwesterly wind to come in, keeping the hot, muggy air mass south of the border.
