Police say a woman killed Saturday in a drive-by shooting on a Deerfoot Trail overpass was not the intended target.

A 17-year-old injured in the same vehicle was likely the intended victim, Calgary police said Monday. He is in hospital in stable condition.

The shooting victim has been identified as Jordan Leinen, 19, of Calgary, following an autopsy completed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on Monday.

Her death has been deemed a homicide, police said.

Officers were called to the Foothills Medical Centre at 6 p.m. Saturday for reports of two victims who had arrived suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds.

Police say that, upon arrival, the 19-year-old woman was declared deceased, and a 17-year-old male was in serious condition. The release states the male has since been upgraded to stable condition.

The shooting is believed to have occurred as the victims were travelling westbound on the 32nd Avenue N.E. overpass above Deerfoot Trail in a white 2008 Acura MDX at approximately 5:20 p.m. Saturday, according to police.

Police say an unknown vehicle or vehicles approached the Acura and fired several rounds into the vehicle, injuring both occupants.

During a press conference Monday afternoon, Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson of the homicide unit said investigators believe the male was the intended target based on where the damage to the vehicle was.

The staff sergeant said the male was the driver and Leinen was the passenger, but he could not provide any further details about the male due to his age.

"This type of violence will not be tolerated in our city, and we are putting several resources from across the service into investigating this incident," reads a statement from Gregson.

Police are asking for anyone with information about the incident, or security camera or dashcam footage of the shooting, to contact them. Information can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers online or by calling 1-800-222-8477.

This is Calgary's 10th homicide of 2024.
