Egypt regrets UN support for initiatives under mining legitimate Libyan institutions role

Arabnews24.ca:Thursday 16 March 2023 10:54 AM: Egypt regretted on Thursday the UN Security Council’s support for an initiative aimed at forming a high-level Libyan team to follow up and prepare for the electoral process in Libya in a clear violation of the role of the legitimate and elected Libyan institutions.

The Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid was responding to an inquiry from the Middle East News Agency, about Egypt’s assessment of the presidential statement issued Wednesday evening by the Security Council regarding Libya.

The spokesman expressed great astonishment at the Security Council’s support for vague initiatives with undefined criteria and objectives, to legitimise their work, and to use loose terms such as “security actors”, which opens room for interpretation and contradiction with the relevant Security Council resolutions.

He added that all this would increase the state of division on the Libyan scene and undermine chances of holding presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible within the framework of a Libyan national consensus.
