Saskatchewan RCMP failed to complete a wellness check on a man in rural Saskatchewan. Eight hours later the man was found with "serious" injuries. He would later die in hospital.

The province's police watchdog has now been called in to investigate.

RCMP say that at approximately 7:14 a.m. CST on Wednesday, officers at the Maidstone detachment received a request to conduct a wellness check at a home in the Rural Municipality of Britannia, an area that sits along the Saskatchewan/Alberta border just north of Lloydminister.

Later investigation found that a physical check on the man was not completed, according to an RCMP news release.

Then, at approximately 5 p.m., RCMP received a report of an injured adult man at the same location.

When officers arrived found the man with serious, but undisclosed, injuries. He was taken to hospital and later died there.

RCMP say the man's family has been notified and victim services will be made available to them.

The Mounties say they are investigating the circumstances around the man death in collaboration with the Saskatchewan Coroners Service.

The Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) was contacted as required under The Police Act. RCMP say SIRT will investigate the response to the initial wellness check.

The RCMP have directed all media inquiries to SIRT. The watchdog organization has said more information is forthcoming.
