RCMP say drug trafficking may have been a factor in what they're calling a double homicide that occurred in Yellowknife on Saturday morning.

In an email to CBC News on Sunday night, Cpl. Matt Halstead, spokesperson for the N.W.T. RCMP, said the investigation to date "supports that these homicides were targeted events that relate to the illicit drug trade in Yellowknife."

He said there doesn't appear to be a risk to the wider public.

Police said on the weekend they were called to a home on Bigelow Crescent, between Williams Avenue and Wolgar Avenue, just after 3:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.

There they found one person dead and another suffering from serious injuries.

The injured person later died at the Stanton Territorial Hospital.

CBC News has learned from two people involved in responding to the emergency that both of the victims suffered gunshot wounds.

Halstead said the investigation is ongoing and that police believe there are witnesses who have not come forward.

"We are appealing to anyone with information, to reach out to us immediately," he wrote.
