Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after a Toronto police SUV collided with an ATV on Monday night.
The collision happened around 10:30 p.m. in the area of Jane Street and Giltspur Drive, in North York.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said officers "observed an ATV of interest" and ended up colliding with it a short time later.
The ATV was being operated by a 13-year-old, while a 12-year-old was riding as a passenger, the SIU said.
Tuesday morning, Toronto Fire said one of the riders became wedged beneath the police SUV during the crash and had to be extracted by crews on scene. The SIU confirmed it was the teen who was temporarily trapped.
The 12-year-old fled the area on foot but was quickly located, according to the SIU.
Both youths were taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Toronto police Chief Myron Demkiw told reporters at a Tuesday news conference that he couldn't speak about the matter because of the ongoing SIU investigation.
However, Jon Reid, head of the Toronto Police Association, said the officers involved were responding to a call at the time.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police officers in incidents that may have resulted in death, serious injury, the discharge of a firearm, or allegations of sexual assault.
