RCMP confirmed two people have been killed in a plane crash south of Squamish, B.C., on Friday evening.

On Saturday, Squamish RCMP said in a statement that they received an automatic plane crash notification, sent from a smartphone, in a remote area on the outskirts of the municipality.

They said that due to challenges in accessing the remote location, they could not confirm many details of the crash.

On Sunday, RCMP said that they were able to access the crash site — located south of Squamish, on the west side of Howe Sound — via air, and confirmed that the two occupants of the plane did not survive the crash.

Police did not say what type of plane crashed in the area, and also did not say what could have caused the crash.

"The RCMP would like to thank Squamish Search and Rescue, Blackcomb Helicopters and several members of the public who were integral in locating and accessing the site of the crash," a police statement read.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) said in a statement it was aware of the "accident," but had not yet deployed investigators to the scene.

The TSB says that it is working with the Squamish RCMP and the B.C. Coroners' Service to investigate the crash.

Squamish is in the Sea-to-Sky region of the South Coast, and is located just around 50 km north of Vancouver.
