Dominic Delisle, a man with a long criminal history in Quebec, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for drug and gun related offences, as well as profiting off the sex trade.

Two counts of human trafficking — an extremely rare charge in Newfoundland and Labrador — were withdrawn as part of a plea deal.

The decision was handed down earlier this week at provincial court in St. John's. The seven year sentence is related to charges for drug trafficking, profiting off the avails of prostitution and gun crimes.

Accounting for time served, Delisle has a little over four years left of his sentence.

CBC News reached out to Delisle by email through his defence lawyer Jonathan Noonan, who declined to comment.

Police investigation into connections to sex-trade work

According to the agreed statement of facts, Delisle was a subject in a police investigation in 2019 and 2020 known as Project Badminton, but it was held up due to the pandemic.

On Aug. 4, 2022, Delisle and an unnamed individual were stopped by police near Howley, N.L. Officers found a baggie that contained 11 ounces of cocaine, a handgun with two magazines, brass knuckles and a knife.

Soon after, police discovered Delsile was involved with the sex trade through the woman he was in a relationship with. Her identity is covered under a publication ban.

Over the course of several weeks in the summer of 2022, communications between Delisle and the woman, as well as between Delsile and others, demonstrated Delisle was aware of the woman's involvement in the sex trade and was actively involved in it. He discussed with her about lowering her prices, told others how much money the woman made, and arranged dropping her off and picking her up at various locations.

Story continues

In one conversation, Delisle told someone how much his partner made and that it paid their bills.

On Aug. 19, 2022, Delisle and the woman talked about how much she should charge for sexual services. She said her rate would be $350, but he responded "No, do three, do what I said babe."

Afterwards, the woman sent him a message that said "F--k sakes I even sell my body to make you happy."

In another message to Delisle, she said "I don't even wanna work anymore anyways you f--king told people about it when I told you to keep your mouth shut about it. I'm f--king humiliated. You had no reason to f--king tell anyone about it."

Long criminal history

Delisle already has an extensive criminal history, with past convictions in Quebec for weapons offences, uttering threats and forcing women into prostitution.

According to Parole Board of Canada documents obtained by CBC News, Delisle has pimping convictions dating back to 2007. Those records indicated that he targeted girls aged 15 to 17.

In 2018, Delisle pleaded guilty in relation to the theft of $30,000 in furniture stolen from a condo he was renting in St. John's.
