RCMP make headway in investigation, but still no arrest in fatal Memramcook car crash

The New Brunswick RCMP say they've had a break-through in a months-long investigation into a fatal car crash in Memramcook.

Police have seized a pickup truck they believe was chasing the car in the lead-up to the crash, resulting in the death of a 17-year-old boy, said RCMP Const. Rob Driscoll in an interview Friday.

Officers are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and have not charged anyone in connection to it, he said.

"That's definitely where we want this investigation to go, but there's still a number of investigative steps that have to happen before we can get to that point."

Members of the RCMP, Memramcook Fire Department and Ambulance New Brunswick responded to a single-vehicle crash on Route 106 at about 1:20 a.m. on Sept. 29.

The boy, who was from Moncton, was a passenger in the vehicle and died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

Pickup driver left the scene

Driscoll said it's believed the driver of the pickup truck was chasing the car when it crashed, but then fled the scene.

He said through their investigation, police located and seized the pickup truck. He declined to say where it was found, or who the owner is.

Driscoll said depending on how the investigation goes, the driver of the truck could face a charge of dangerous driving causing death.

"More investigative steps sort of have to play out, and we'll see where those details sort of lead us," he said.

Driscoll said police believe people who were at an event in Memramcook that night might know more about what happened. He said he's encouraging anyone with information to speak with police.
