A system that is tracking up the U.S. East Coast will move towards the southern Maritimes for the end of the weekend.

Periods of difficult travel are likely on Sunday, and possibly into the Monday morning commute, especially for sections of southern Nova Scotia that look to face the brunt of the storm.

A low pressure system that’ll bring widespread snow to portions of New England will continue chugging across the border to end the weekend. As the low tracks up the east coast, it will interact with high pressure in Quebec and Labrador.

Latest computer models agree that this high pressure will likely steer the storm south as it tracks towards the Maritimes. This track would limit snowfall for most regions except the southwest of Nova Scotia, where special weather statements have been issued. The opposing pressure systems however, will kick up gusty winds for much of the Maritimes.

Snow is forecast to start Sunday morning across southwestern Nova Scotia. It will attempt to push east into Halifax and north into Saint John, N.B., with a chance for these cities to see some flurries. But at this time, it is more likely for the heaviest snow to stay in Shelburne County with between 10-20 cm forecast.

The snowfall will be accompanied with strong wind gusts, especially along the southern shorelines where 50-80 km/h wind gusts are possible. This will cause reduced visibility, with the threat for whiteout conditions at times.

The snow will continue for the rest of Sunday before gradually easing through the overnight hours, leaving behind a mess to clean up before the Monday morning commute.
