We’re on the lookout for a storm expected to churn toward the Maritimes this weekend that may bring a widespread burst of snow to the region on Sunday.

There is some uncertainty surrounding the extent of the snow on the edge of the system, with subtle changes in and around the storm affecting the outcome.

Regardless, expect periods of difficult travel on Sunday and possibly into the Monday morning commute.

A low-pressure system that’ll bring widespread snow to portions of New England will continue chugging across the border to end the weekend, bringing frozen precipitation to the Maritimes beginning on Sunday.

Snow will begin in the morning in southwestern Nova Scotia around Yarmouth before spreading east toward Halifax early Sunday afternoon. Precipitation will continue through Sunday before easing into the overnight hours, leaving behind a mess to clean up before the Monday morning commute.

STAY SAFE: Be aware of your heart while shovelling heavy snow

Strong wind will accompany the snowfall across Nova Scotia, where gusts of 50-80 km/h are possible during the storm, especially along the southern shores. The combination of snowfall and gusty winds will lead to reduced visibility and dangerous road conditions during the storm.

The greatest forecast confidence exists over southwestern Nova Scotia, where Yarmouth and Shelburne could see 10-20 cm of snow by Monday morning. Folks around Halifax stand to see 5-10 cm of snow from this system.

Maritimes Snow Outlook

Maritimes Snow Outlook

The interaction between this storm and a centre of high pressure to the north leaves uncertainty in snowfall around southern New Brunswick. Folks along the Fundy Shores could see up to 10 cm of snow on Sunday.

However, if the high pressure up north stays a bit stronger, it’ll deflect the storm a bit farther south and the New Brunswick coast could get hardly any snow at all. Check back on Friday and Saturday for the latest on this delicate atmospheric tango.
